The first time I discovered the buriti fruit was by accident. I was walking in Kauai, Hawaii exploring local flora when I came across these magnificent spheres. They were tessellated with a protective armor that resembled an armadillo. Fascinated by their morphology, I collected several specimens. It wasn't until later that I identified these as fruits of the Mauritia flexuosa tree. At LINNÉ, we source our buriti oil from Brazil, where the fruit grows in optimal conditions that support its exceptional nutrient density.
Upon further investigation I learned that buriti oil has an extremely high antioxidant content and highest natural occurrence of pro vitamin A available (carotenoids). The rich unsaturated fatty acids in the oil help restore moisture and renew tissue. The nutrient profile fortifies and protects cells by supporting the production of collagen and elastin. Modern analysis confirms that buriti oil contains significant levels of beta carotene, tocopherols, and essential fatty acids, all of which help defend the skin from oxidative stress and support barrier repair. Its oleic acid content also enhances topical absorption, allowing these nutrients to reach deeper layers of the skin.
One of the most fascinating aspects of buriti oil is its traditional extraction process. The ripe fruits are first softened in warm water so their tough, scaly husks can be removed. The exposed pulp, rich in reddish orange carotenoids, is then pressed or gently kneaded until the oil begins to separate. Because buriti oil is naturally dense and highly pigmented, it rises to the surface where it is skimmed off and carefully filtered. This method preserves the fruit’s nutrients and is responsible for the oil’s deep amber color, a visual indicator of its antioxidant potency.
It is also a natural anti inflammatory that can reduce redness and calm skin conditions such as psoriasis and eczema, and reactions such as diaper rash. This soothing effect is linked to its unique blend of carotenoids and anti inflammatory fatty acids, which help moderate the skin’s response to irritation while supporting barrier resilience.
Buriti also does wonders for the scalp. It repairs dry, damaged and chemically treated hair, adding shine and silkiness. Because this oil moisturizes, strengthens and smooths to prevent frizz and unruly tresses we knew it would be a perfect oil for both hair and body. Studies on buriti’s lipid composition show that it helps reduce protein loss in hair fibers and enhances the smoothness of the cuticle, which explains its ability to improve shine, softness, and manageability.
When it came time to formulate an everywhere oil, I knew I had to include this remarkable ingredient.
