The Benefits of Bio-Resin Packaging

the benefit of bio-resin packaging

After supply chain and shipping delays our new sugarcane bottles are here! We are so thrilled to share this new design. Not only does the soft pliable tube make dispensing our thick products a breeze, but the material itself builds on LINNÉ’s commitment to doing better business.

These tubes are far from perfect and as an industry we still have a long way to go, but they are a step in the right direction. As with all of our ingredients we did a ton of research when selecting this material and our suppliers. Not all sugarcane products are alike so we wanted to ensure we were making a responsible choice. Here are some of the reasons why we made this choice:

CARBON REDUCTION

  • Conventional, petroleum-based polyethylene emits 1.83 metric tons of CO2 into the atmosphere for every 1 metric ton that is manufactured. On the other hand, polyethylene made from sugarcane sequesters 3.09 metric tons of CO2 from the atmosphere for every 1 metric ton of sugarcane polyethylene that is manufactured. In effect, there is a five-fold environmental benefit to producing sugarcane polyethylene versus fossil-fuel based polyethylene.

FARMING PRACTICES

  • Sugarcane as a crop is water-efficient: almost all of the crops are irrigated naturally from rainfall.
  • The sugarcane crops is not cultivated in or even near the Amazon, Pantanal or Alto Paraguai River Basin biomes.
  • The mill is committed to using only existing land that was converted to sugarcane crops over 20 years ago.
  • Conservation land and biodiversity is respected and promoted.
  • The crop land for sugarcane is only about 1% of the farmland in Brazil.
  • No GMO’s are used in the growing of Brazilian sugarcane, so the sugar for producing bio-plastics is GMO-free.
  • The mill does not use any pesticides prohibited by the: Stockholm Convention (Annex A); Rotterdam Convention (Annex 3); Montreal Protocol (Annexes A, B, C and E), even if approved by the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply (MAPA) for sugarcane cultivation.
  • Our supplier respects and promotes human rights in its activities throughout the production chain. This includes the promotion of gender equality and dignified working conditions.

BY-PRODUCTS

  • The pulp-like byproduct from extracting sugarcane ethanol (referred to as “bagasse”) is a bio-fuel that is used to produce both heat energy used in the mill, and electricity which is used to power the manufacturing plant along with powering surrounding cities.
  • The liquid by-product of sugarcane production (referred to as “vinasse”) is used to fertilize the next season’s crops.
  • Our tubes are BPA-free and third party verified.

Our tubes are recyclable. To ensure recyclability you can pop the cap off after use or cut the sealed end to release every last drop and rinse the bottle clean. Thank you for doing your part.
