SKIN TO SKIN CONTACT

Nothing better than being skin to skin. It’s quite incredible what is possible when mother and baby allow their epidermis to touch. Skin to skin contact enables colonisation of the baby’s skin with the mother’s friendly bacteria, thus providing protection against infection. It also helps regulate heartbeat and temperature, improves oxygen saturation, stimulates the release of hormones to support breastfeeding and mothering, and reduces cortisol levels.

And it’s just as beneficial for adults. Skin to skin contact with a partner, friend or family member increases oxytocin levels and boosts serotonin and dopamine levels, all of which contribute to happier individuals with lower stress levels. We’re all for that!
