HAIR HEALTH


Hair grows on nearly every part of the body, with the exception of your lips palms and bottoms of your feet. It originates in the hair follicle and it forms in a manner similar to the skin: rapid division and differentiation of stem cells into keratinocytes that get pushed up and become flattened, dead, keratinized cells. Even though the hair that is visible to us is dead, it still requires care to keep it looking healthy. Dyes, sun exposure, products and constant use of heat all affect the quality of our hair. To correct and prevent damage we recommend the following: 


WASH YOUR HAIR LESS OFTEN: One of the worst things you can do to your hair is wash it everyday. Water makes hair swell from the inside causing not only frizz but breakage. We recommend washing your hair every 2 to 3 days depending on your hair type (some of us only need to wash our hair weekly). If your hair doesn’t look or feel greasy, let it rest. 

CHANGE YOUR DIET: Like the skin, healthy hair starts from within. First and foremost, one’s water intake is critical to the health of one’s hair. A diet rich in healthy fats coming from plant and fish oils can play a role in improving the health, shine, and strength of one’s hair. Aim to eat a healthy, well-balanced diet that’s rich in protein, zinc, vitamins and minerals. As with the skin, fruits and vegetables rich in vitamin C can help increase our collagen production in turn improving the strength of one’s locks.

CLEAN HAIR PRODUCTS: Just as much as you care about what goes on your skin you should care about what you put on your hair. Not only do ingredients in shampoo and conditioner seep into the scalp, these products also comes in contact with the face and upper torso, which at the very least can cause breakouts. Shampoo and conditioner filled with sulfates, parabens, phthalates, dimethicones, silicones, and fragrances can also strip the hair and scalp of its natural oils leaving the hair dry and brittle.


Conversely hair products with natural, plant-derived ingredients go beyond the surface of your hair and address scalp health and work to repair and strengthen the hair cuticles, not just mask the problem like silicon-based products.
