Katy, tell us about yourself. What led you to start a career as a professional dancer, to then go on to become a Sculpt Society trainer, and on top of that become an influential figure in the beauty and wellness space?
Movement has always been such an integral part of my life, since I could walk I was dancing. I really could never, and still can't, sit still. My mom put me in dance when I was three and I have never looked back! I grew up in Wisconsin with my dreams set for NYC at an early age and worked my butt off to make it here. I went to Marymount Manhattan College on the upper east side and received a BFA in dance with my concentration being modern dance. Soon upon graduation, my dance career started as I became a Knicks City Dancer. ( Dream come true! ) Since then I have performed all over the city, been in music videos, TV shows, while always teaching fitness or dance to young girls on the side. Just put me on a stage or in front of a camera and I feel right at home :) ! Becoming a trainer at The Sculpt Society was such a natural transition with my background and I feel so blessed everyday when I teach - I truly feel like I am performing center court at Madison Square Garden again.
Being a self proclaimed beauty junkie, talking about skincare and makeup on my social channels is the most natural thing. I have worked with some amazing makeup artists and estheticians and have learned so many tricks of the trade that I love to share with my community. I truly believe that health, wellness, and beauty are all so connected and I hope to show that it can be accessible by all.
How do you stay connected to your roots in dance?
I mean, if you know me you know I am ALWAYS dancing. Like always. I express myself so much better through movement - it's what makes me, me! When I teach on The Sculpt Society app every week I am using all of my years of dance training to help support my classes. Dance will and forever will be apart of my being. I am a dancer.
How do you balance your career in fitness with your beauty and wellness platform on Instagram?
I think that they really go hand in hand. When I move my body, I feel better and want to nourish my body with healthy foods, and take care of the vehicle that does so much for me. My skincare routine in the morning and night is MY time. It is when I can center myself and take care of my skin - even if that is only for 5 minutes. I love to bring my community into my world and talk about the things that i am passionate about - i never feel like it is a chore.
What is your biggest skincare secret?
Drink all the water you can, wear sunscreen everyday ( Yes even in the winter) and NEVER EVER EVER go to bed with makeup on. Like ever.
What does your morning routine look like?
My morning routine is always changing, but for the most part these few steps stay constant.
Wake up
Cuddle my perfect angel dog Lady
Kiss my husband
( The Today show is on at this point)
go downstairs to make my HUGE lemon water and sometimes a coffee or match depending how i am feeling
Morning skincare routine - my mornings are always simple
Start to get ready for the day, makeup and pick out a cute workout outfit
Go over content for my TSS class
and then hit record and start filming!
What is the biggest challenge being in the beauty and wellness space online?
Not comparing myself to other creators or people on instagram. I think it is a very natural and human thing - but I think we all need to come from a space of acceptance and empowerment. I have to remind myself of that. We are all on a separate journey and we have to take faith that we are where we are supposed to be at that very moment.
What is one tip you have for anyone who wants to begin leading a healthier lifestyle and doesn’t know where to start?
Start small ! Be that moving your body for 15 mins and slowly working your way up to 30, or going on a long walk. Commit to doing less more often. Find an accountability partner or community - that is what The sculpt Society does for me. Having that support system is a game changer.
You exude such light and are a true ray of positivity, how do you remain positive in the digital space?
That is so sweet :) ! I always say that it is easier to be nice or smile than to do the opposite. I try to stay focused on staying true to who I am and speak my truth. It is a big responsibility when having a following that I don't take lightly. I am so fortunate that I have cultivated a community of like minded women that want to lift each other up and support one another. Also having an amazing family ( even if they are far away ) , an incredible husband, the cutest dog in the world, inspiring women through my workouts and talking about all things beauty and fashion for work?! I am the luckiest girl in the world. I am eternally grateful.
