Ingredient IQ: Sacha Inchi

Sacha inchi seed oil is obtained from Plukenetia volubilis, a perennial plant native to the tropical rainforests of Venezuela, Colombia, Peru, Bolivia, and Brazil. Long valued throughout this region, the plant has been cultivated for centuries for its nutritional density and versatility. At LINNÉ, we source our Sacha inchi oil from Peru, where it is grown and processed under conditions that preserve its natural integrity and support local farming communities.

The name “sacha inchi” comes from the Quechua words for false (sacha) and peanut (inchi). Despite the translation, it is not related to peanuts and is not considered a common allergen. Historically, the seeds were roasted and enjoyed as a food, and in Peru the oil served as a dietary staple as early as the pre Inca era. Archaeological evidence of the plant appears on Mochica and Chimu ceramics more than 3000 years old.

Although the global skincare world discovered Sacha inchi only recently, scientific research began in 1978 and revealed its exceptional chemical and nutritional profile. The seeds are rich in unsaturated fats, fiber, protein, vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, phytosterols, and diverse phytochemicals. Across multiple studies, Sacha inchi has demonstrated antioxidant, hypolipidemic, immunomodulatory, and emollient activity.

Benefits for the Skin

Sacha inchi oil is especially valued in skincare because of its high content of alpha linolenic acid, an omega 3 fatty acid known for its ability to penetrate the outer layers of the skin efficiently. Combined with omega 6 and omega 9 fatty acids, as well as humectant phytosterols such as beta sitosterol and stigmasterol, Sacha inchi supports the skin in several ways:

• moisturizes, soothes, and softens the skin surface
• strengthens and restores the skin’s lipid barrier
• helps prevent transepidermal water loss
• offers antioxidant protection against free radicals and UV induced stress
• calms visible redness and irritation, and can support acne prone skin

This multi faceted profile makes Sacha inchi particularly suitable for formulations designed to nurture barrier function and promote resilient, comfortable skin.

Environmental and Social Impact

Because Sacha inchi is indigenous to the Amazon rainforest, its cultivation carries unique ecological potential. Unlike many extractive agribusinesses, Sacha inchi farming can contribute positively to the ecosystem. As a perennial forest crop, it can help re forest land previously cleared for livestock and other intensive agricultural operations. Its cultivation encourages the return of native species and supports more balanced soil and water systems.

Socially, Sacha inchi provides a legal and sustainable income source for rural farming communities. In certain regions, it has become a meaningful alternative to illicit coca cultivation, contributing to broader economic stability and long term environmental stewardship.

Sacha Inchi in LINNÉ

Sacha inchi is one of the restorative oils featured in our REPAIR Face Oil, where it contributes to barrier support, moisture retention, and overall skin comfort. Its unique blend of fatty acids and antioxidants helps bring nourishment and equilibrium to skin in need of replenishment.

There is much to appreciate about Sacha inchi, from its scientific efficacy to its ecological and cultural value. Its presence in our formulations reflects our commitment to ingredients that support both skin health and environmental well being.
