Ingredient IQ: Avocado

Avocado oil is pressed from the flesh of Persea gratissima , a fruit native to regions of the Americas and the Caribbean. Alternatively called the alligator pear, the avocado has been cultivated since at least 900 A.D. and has long been used in beauty and skin care practices by Indigenous communities throughout Central and North America. Today, at LINNÉ, we source our avocado oil from Kenya and South Africa, where the fruit grows in nutrient rich soils that support its high quality lipid profile.

As an occlusive skin conditioning agent, avocado oil helps slow the evaporation of water from the skin surface, allowing the skin to retain more moisture. Although it provides this protective occlusive function, avocado oil is not considered pore clogging and is well suited to most skin types.

This richly nourishing oil absorbs easily and contains more than 20 percent essential unsaturated fatty acids, as well as vitamins A, B, C, and E, proteins, lecithin, and potassium. The latter is sometimes referred to as the youth mineral for its role in maintaining the feel and function of healthy skin.

Avocado oil is known for its ability to soften, condition, and support the skin barrier. Its high content of sterolins, also called unsaponifiables, contributes to its moisturizing and smoothing effects. These compounds help improve the look of dry or rough skin and have been traditionally used to support concerns such as hyperpigmentation, flakiness, and visible irritation. The oil’s natural antioxidant and lipid profile also make it a supportive ingredient for those looking to maintain elasticity and protect the skin from environmental stressors.

Beyond its topical benefits for skin, avocado oil is valued for its ability to nourish the hair. Its rich, emollient nature helps smooth the cuticle, add shine, and support stronger, more manageable strands.

Experience the benefits of avocado oil in our SMOOTH Body Balm and ACTIVATE Body Wash, where it helps condition, protect, and restore the skin for a soft, hydrated, and resilient feel.
